ANTHRAX PROTECTION by
our new
MAIL INSPECTION AND HANDLING WORKSTATIONS
Designed to protect operators from biological warfare agents while
sorting mail
In response to
the current global threat of biological warfare involving aerosol /
particulate based agents such as anthrax (B. anthracis), and toxic
chemical vapors, Air Science Technologies™
and ESCO is making available a unique line of enclosures designed as an
aid for the safe containment of such potential biological weapons.
Foreseen applications for these enclosures include the processing of
suspicious, leaking, unidentified mail and other items. Units are
available in widths from 2 to 6 feet.
How They Work - all enclosures have a high-velocity air curtain
that moves into the interior from outside. Air passes through a three step
filtration process before exhausting back to the room: pre-filters which
improve main filter efficiencies (gross particulates larger than 5
micron), optional activated carbon filters (removes chemicals vapors) and
finally a HEPA filter efficient to 99.999% at 0.3 microns which removes
particles and powders.
Due to the high-velocity curtain of air moving into the enclosure, most
biological hazards generated when handling items inside the enclosure will
be contained and passed through the filters before exhaust. Hence, when
operated in accordance with our recommendations and mail handling
protocol, air discharged back to the room will be clean and free of any
hazards to both the user and the environment.

Products Available:
Class II - Units are available that in addition to protecting the
operator also provide a sterile work environment in the enclosure.
Recommended for use when samples need to be protected as well (typically
not when sorting mail).
Class III - Units are available however require external ductwork
to vent to the atmosphere. This can not only be time consuming as well as
expensive as ‘make-up’ air needs to be brought back into the room.
Ductless Fume Hoods - equipped with HEPA and Carbon filters.
REMEMBER, no fume hood can guarantee the level of protection and
containment equal to Biological Safety Cabinet and the limited use of
these for Mail Handling would only be recommended for users that are at an
extremely low risk factor to receive biohazard parcels through the mail. |
